What to Wear
- Riders should be smartly turned out, wearing:
- Tweed jackets
- Cream/beige jodhpurs or breeches
- Shirt and tie/stock
- Black or brown long boots
- Raincoats are acceptable in poor weather conditions
Horses
- Must be fit with sound brakes.
- Horses should be clean and smartly turned out for all meets.
- Plaiting is not essential but desired for the opening meet.
- Horses that kick should wear a red ribbon in their tail.
- If it’s the first time for your horse, you should wear a green ribbon.
Etiquette
- The field will be advised on the day who is the Field Master.
- Always stay behind the Master unless told otherwise.
- Do not ride too close to the horse in front.
- All instructions must be passed down the field.
- Always thank passing traffic for slowing down and make way to allow road traffic to pass as soon as possible.
Safety
- Always keep the horse’s head facing the hounds.
- Always wait your turn to jump and allow plenty of room for other members of the field.
- If you are not jumping, please carry on behind the Field Master.
- Always give way to the hounds.
- If you see wire or holes in the ground or anything deemed dangerous, pass a message through the field with specific details (“wire on the leftâ€).
Terms You May Hear
- “Hounds pleaseâ€: Usually means the pack is coming through; please move out of the way.
- “Hold hardâ€: This means stop your horse immediately.
- “Headland pleaseâ€: Means you must stay at the edge of the field to protect crops.
- “Gate pleaseâ€: Means the last person should shut the gate.
- “Hound/Whip on the left/rightâ€: Means you should move to the opposite side to allow hounds or the Whip to come through.
Foot Followers
- Please be careful not to walk in front of jumps or cross the lines.
- Please do not obstruct other road traffic.
